The wreck of the Sultana is the United States’ worst maritime disaster, and many of the casualties were Civil War soldiers and Ohio sons returning home after the war. Many had just been released from Confederate prisoner of war camps. Some like Arthur Jones were returning from the infamous camp in Andersonville, Georgia. Arthur was the only man from Northeast Ohio who survived the disaster. He returned home to become a success, but he never forgot his experience.
